Walking Rugby is a new version of the game, specifically targeted at the over-50s male & female, which is becoming very popular across the country. And you don't need to have any previous rugby experience.

Hinckley Rugby Club in partnership with Hinckley & Boswroth Borough Council are setting up a new Walking Rugby group that will meet at the rugby club's Leicester Road ground every Monday from 10.30-11.30. The first six sessions are being funded by Hinckley Borough Council and will be free of charge. Thereafter, there will be a minimal charge for attendance. It’s a great chance to get a little exercise, enjoy a post session coffee in the Cream Rooms and meet a few new friends.

Club veteran Neil Haagensen, the club's primary mover, suggests ‘As the name indicates, running is forbidden which suits me very nicely these days. There are no tackles, no scrums, and no rucks or mauls. Players are allowed to hold onto the ball for no more than three seconds before they have to pass it on which keeps the game moving and gives the other team the opportunity to intercept. You score by simply walking over the line with the ball – no goalposts. Even better, you get a rest every 15 minutes as the game is played over four 15 minute quarters. In actual fact you can rest when you want!’

Former England and Leicester Tigers captain Martin Corry helped in drawing up the rules for the new game. ‘The essence of the game is the same as normal rugby,‘ commented Corry, ’but without the heavy physical contact. The main emphasis is to get the ball in your hands, get going forward, and look for space.’

Hinckley Chairman John Tilley added. ‘You don’t need to have played rugby before to enjoy walking rugby and it for both men and women. Anyone over 50 can get involved and enjoy it. There are even some 80 year olds who have shown an interest so it’s definitely worth going along and trying it out if you fancy it.’

Sessions start on Monday, 5 August and anyone who would like to give the game a try can contact Neil Haagensen on 07921 055896 for more details. Alternatively, simply turn up at the Club at 10.30 on Monday morning. There will be free tea & coffee afterwards in the Cream Rooms for the first 6 sessions.
