Hinckley’s large squad played its first fixture as Juniors against Banbury RFC on Sunday.

After being presented with new playing Kit and Formal shirt & ties, the Hinckley boys came out of the changing room fired up for a tough contest with Banbury.

Banbury also had a large squad, which enabled four 15 minute quarters of competitive Rugby to be played.

Q1 was a fantastic opening quarter of Junior rugby, with both teams putting in hard tackles and strong runs. Hinckley had the better of Banbury in the scrum and were camped in Banbury’s half for most of the quarter. Hinckley’s strong forwards recycled the ball for numerous phases resulting in the only try of the quarter. A whole team effort grounded by scrum half Wainde.

Q2 seen almost complete personnel change by both sides and another quarter of competitive Rugby followed. Hinckley still the stronger team with the forwards dominating proceedings resulted in two more tries for scrum half Drakeford, an excellent offload from Mensforth Grove to Ellershaw on the wing to score in the corner.

Q3 saw some complacency creep into the Hinckley game with Banbury scoring a couple of breakaway tries.

Q4 had Banbury fighting for the draw pulling level with 5 minutes to go. The Hinckley squad had a word with themselves and returned with the same intensity seen in Q1. Two Hinckley tries from Moore & Hurley-Smith put the game out of Banbury’s reach.

Overall a very encouraging mornings rugby with the Hinckley boys proving they can make the step up to Junior Rugby.

However a Tie tying and shirt tucking in training session may be on the cards as the boys get to grips with the formalities of Rugby Union.
