Hinckley RFC vs Lymm RFC Past History

John Tilley9 Oct - 07:30

A little blast from the past

Prior to our match against Lymm RFC on Saturday we have investigated our past fixtures against them. Firstly, a little bit about our opposition. Lymm Rugby Football Club are based in Cheshire. The club was formed on January 14, 1960, after a group of young men in Lymm, Cheshire, formed a drinking club and decided a rugby team was the way to achieve this. Men after my own heart! They are a community-oriented, strictly amateur club that runs multiple senior, colts, and a full range of junior sides. It also has facilities for other sports, including squash and field hockey.

Hinckley and Lymm have competed before in the 2013/14 season in National League 3 Midlands after Lymm were level transferred from National league 3 North.

Hinckley won both games 42-7 at Lymm and then 38-33 at Leicester Rd. The headline from the Leicester Rd game was David Howgate broke his leg in the first few minutes. Here are a few game images and the team coached by Paul Walsh. Watch out for a young Steve Harvey and many other familiar faces.

Hinckley: Culpin, Harris, Howe, Howgate, Constant; Moxon, Glover; Harvey, S Massarella, Peck, Marshall, Deaville, Goddard, Avent, Fearn (c). Reps: Macqueen, McFedries, Bonnin-Ward. Some names to remember!

Match Report
Hinckley RFC welcomed a Lymm side who were much improved from when the two sides visited the north west in November, with the home side having to score 15 points in the last 10 minutes to secure the victory, writes Chris Campbell.

The game started horrendously, with centre David Howgate breaking and dislocating his left ankle in the first minute.

This led to a 15 minute delay to allow Howgate to be moved from the field. The centre underwent an operation in Leicester and is in good spirits.

Hinckley didn’t let this affect them, playing some clean and efficient rugby in the opening stages. The first score should have come when Richard Harris dropped a ball within sight of the line.

But this wasn’t to cost the home side, as moments later Tom Moxon picked an excellent line off Joe Glover to score under the posts. Glover converted with a 7-0 lead.

Both sides then traded penalties before an overthrown Hinckley lineout put Lymm in a strong attacking position inside the home 22, leading to their own converted score, leaving the game at 10 all after 21 minutes.

Penalties were again traded as offences at the breakdown dominated the game before Lymm got a second converted score following a missed tackle in the midfield. Before the break Glover kicked a third penalty leaving the home side four behind.

The lead went back Hinckley’s way after 52 minutes when Mitch Culpin scored blasted through the defence for his first score since his return from injury. Glover maintained his 100% kicking record.

As the game began to break up, Lymm got their noses back in front with another converted score to go 27-23 up with 18 to go, and to make matters worse, Hinckley lost Ben Avent to the bin - having previously left the field with a cut which later required nine stiches - for a dangerous tackle. In fact it was a case of mistaken identity with Devon Constant being the man who should have gone off, which worked to Hinckley’s benefit in the following minutes.

Being down to 14 seemed to suit Hinckley, with Culpin scoring a superb solo try with 11 minutes to go. Glover’s conversion put the score at 30 all.

Then just a couple of minutes later, Hinckley went ahead with Constant handing off his opposite man to score a trademark try, giving the home side a bonus point. Glover’s conversion was missed meaning the score was within five.

However from the restart Hinckley won a penalty, then won another from the resulting set piece, which Glover kicked to give some breathing space to the home side.

With five minutes to go there was still time for Lymm to force a result however the home difference held firm, and the visitors had to settle for a penalty to give them a losing bonus which they without doubt deserved.

Hinckley: Culpin, Harris, Howe, Howgate, Constant; Moxon, Glover; Harvey, S Massarella, Peck, Marshall, Deaville, Goddard, Avent, Fearn (c). Reps: Macqueen, McFedries, Bonnin-Ward.
