Hinckley U14’s- Convincing win at Ashby in County Cup second round
Hinckley were the visitors to Ashby for this second round County Cup tie on a bright but blustery autumn morning.
Ashby kicked off into a substantial breeze and Hinckley started well with a strong tackle from Bradbury showing that the visitors meant business. Hinckley came close to scoring first when Roberts burst down the left wing and would have scored but for a high tackle which was penalised by the referee. Hinckley soon took advantage of the field position and Collings crashed over from the base of the scrum for a trademark try. Baker then duly converted (0:7). The Hinckley pack soon began to dominate winning several scrums against the head as the visitors continued to apply pressure; Baker used the favourable wind to push Ashby back with some clever kicks. Tries from Murphy, Bradbury, Collings, Branson and Padbury with associated conversions from Baker made the score Ashby 0 Hinckley 36 at half time.
Hinckley kicked off the second half with the wind now blowing strongly into their faces. However, the visitors were soon again camped in Ashby’s half after strong running from Bradbury almost put in Padbury who was just held up over the try line. From the resulting scrum Roberts attacked down the other wing and Ward crashed over from the base of the resulting ruck with the support of several other forwards. The 8th try of the day was scored by Rowe followed by a 9th by Ward and a 10th by Kingdon. To their credit Ashby battled on and had their best spell of the match in the last 10 minutes and went over for a consolation try (7:60). The Hinckley coaches were rightly pleased by a solid squad performance, which was a crystallisation of many hours of hard work on the training ground and saw them move comfortably into the next round of the County Cup.
Final Score– Ashby 7 Hinckley 60
Hinckley U15’s- Honours Even.
An under strength Oakham gave Hinckleys Under 15s fright after fright as with the help of 3 Hinckley players they gave the home side much to think about in this close contest.
Opening with an opportunistic try from Clayton and following up quickly with a very good team effort sealed by Adcock and converted by Clayton Hinckley relaxed and Oakham leapt at the chance scoring a good team effort and converting it. Still reeling Hinckley could only watch as Oakham integrated their 3 loan players and scored yet again before the always consistent Atkinson scored to put Hinckley 5 points ahead but Oakham yet again scored to make it even at the half way stage.
In a second half made difficult by the strong cross wind Hinckley continued to struggle against a side that refused to give up. Spencer powered down the field to take a fine try but Oakham struck back and then converted narrowing the lead to 3 points.
Birkenshaw finished off a good team effort with a “showboat” under the posts but again a tired Oakham summoned up all their reserves and replied with their own try. But in the final minutes Clayton forced his way over and then converted to restre Hinckleys 5 point margin.
Final score Hinckley U15s 34 Oakham 29
