Otley defeat shows continued progression

Chris Campbell23 Aug 2015 - 21:12

First try for Driver as the team continue to move forward

Game two of pre-season took Hinckley then they will travel all season, going north of Leeds to take on Otley. The coaching team made a number of changes from last weeks win at Burton, with Tom Sanderson, Jordan Goddard, Matthew Fearn, Sam Greasley and George Marsden all coming in for their first run out of the year, with them being joined by Rob Bryant on debut, and Callum Dacey making his first start. Captain Alex Salt was absent ill, meaning last year's captain Matthew Fearn lead the team.

On a hot and very humid day the conditions were testing for both players, especially with both sides looking to run the ball from every year, with a very limited amount of kicking in the first half meaning there was a high amount of time with the ball in play. The scoreboard didn't read too kindly for Hinckley after 25 minutes, as they were down 21 - 0. However one of the key objectives set by the coaching staff was to be brave and try out areas which have been worked on over the summer, accepting the risks that came with this, and this certainly contributed to Otley winning some ball in try scoring areas.

Hinckley looked dangerous in attack and made a number of line breaks however the final pass went missing on a few occasions - however before half time, the visitors were on the board with Sam Driver cutting an intelligent line to score his first try for the club, converted by Mark Lord.

Otley scored first after the break finishing off a move from the set piece, however from then on Hinckley dominated territory and possession. Mitch Culpin scored his second try in two weeks as a result of this pressure 15 minutes before the end, again converted by Lord, but the side will have been disappointed not to score more with the amount of time spent in the home 22, and will be something that needs to be looked at this week.

Following on from the game, head coach Chris Campbell said, 'it is strange preparing for games such as this - we openly said before the game that we would rather lose and learn something, then win and learn nothing. And in losing we certainly learnt a lot, a lot of which was positive and that makes it worthwhile not playing to a game plan which would have made our chances of winning significant increased, although it would still have been a tall order against a good side from the league above. I would say I am pretty happy with where we are in our preparations at the moment, although we will change our focus this week, aiming to win the game against Leicester Lions before a very tough game to start the season at home to Scunthorpe'.
