1st half tries from Callum Dacey and Mitch Lamb

Hinckley extended their unbeaten run to 4, with a low scoring but exciting and tense victory over South Leicester on Saturday.

The Hinckley side contained 5 former South players in Luke Coltman, Dave Peck, Joe Glover, Mark Lord and Mitch Culpin (making his 100th 1st XV appearance) with the last victory over South coming back in September 2013, when both sides where in National 3 Midlands. There were also home debuts for George Cox, Conor Buillvant and Alex Crocker whilst Sam Massarella and Scott Hamilton returned from injury on the bench.

Playing down the slope first half, a lot of the early exchanges involved kick tennis, however from a South line out, an overthrow landed in the hands of Joe Glover who moved the ball through the hands to Callum Dacey who burst through some weak tackling from the visitors to score after just 3 minutes.

South replied with a penalty from Ricky Aley after 9 minutes, before the visitors then suffered two yellow cards, for a pull back and a high tackle. Hinckley were unable to take Advantage however, with no further score until the 33 minute when Lord dropped a kick into the in goal area for Mitch Lamb. The score was therefore 10-3 at the break, with Aley missing a penalty from wide out at the end of the half.

The second half was all South - Aley kicked a second penalty after 48 minutes, and apart from a missed effort from Glover soon after, Hinckley spent most of the half on the defensive. South turned down a number of more than kickable penalties however a combination of some outstanding maul defence and an excellent midfield partnership between Glen Murray and Culpin meant the line was not to be broken. The final play saw a cross kick which was grounded by South but the ball had been knocked on in the build up, giving the home side a victory built on guts, determination and will power.

Next week, Hinckley travel to Luctonians, with confidence continuing to build.
