Hinckley extended their winning run to 6 on Saturday with their highest points total of the season, beating fellow promoted side Sheffield Tigers 47-24, in an entertaining game containing 11 tries,
The home side continued to rotate the starting XV with Fearn, Peck and Murray moving to the bench, and notably, the match day 20 contained 11 of the 19 who were in the match day squad against Wirral in April for the promotion play off (plus David Peck who left for one year to play at South Leicester) a side Sheffield know well from their time in National 3 North.
Hinckley dominated early proceedings and looked likely to get the first score, with the first half as a whole offering up to the supporters some of the most impressive attacking rugby seen at Leicester Road in recent times. However the score went to Sheffield, as when Conor Buillivant dropped the ball with the line in sight it was cleared up by the visiting full back who broke to all but a metre from the Hinckley line, with one of his back three colleagues on hand to finish the opportunity.
Back came Hinckley quickly, and it was Jacob Umaga who struck with an excellent change of angle and finish. Umaga, the England U20 player and Glen Murray, who was joined this year whilst studying for a PGCE in the area, have between them make big impacts in the 12 shirt this season, covering a position where big opportunities were available following the retirement of Ryan Oakes, the move of Rich Harris to Market Bosworth and Josh Smith having spent the first part of the season injured.
In a game which looked like it could finish 40 all, the visitors soon struck again with an intercept, however following that the game was one way traffic for the rest of the half, with Hinckley scoring 4 tries in 25 minutes, the first of those coming from Buillivant finishing a move in the outside channels.
Captain Alex Salt was next on the score board - the number 8, who has scored now 31 tries in just over the last two seasons was set up by clubman and infrequent third team player (when not in the first team) Steve Harvey, whilst the bonus point score was a tail of the two second rows, with an excellent break from Ehize Ehiozode being finished by Ben Marshall who went over for just his 7th try in the last 5 years.
Just before half time the final score of the half came from Ben Avent, and with four conversions from Buillivant, the half time score was 33-12.
The second half didn't quite have the flow to it however Hinckley did get a sixth and seventh score. The sixth went to 18 year old scrum half Alex Crocker from the base of a scrum, whilst the 7th was a well collected intercept from Mitch Lamb, continuing his run of 58 uninterrupted starts. Both tries were converted by Joe Glover, a product of the clubs successful junior system.
Unfortunately for Hinckley two tries were conceded, the last one on the whistle to give the away side a try bonus, although it was very much deserved. However it was an excellent performance, and with 4 more of last years team soon to return from holiday or injury to come into the selection mix, competition for places continued to be fierce as we move into a run of 7 games which include the top 6 teams, which will give the team a real marker of their current progress.
