Not pretty, but a bonus point win on home turf.

Not pretty, but a bonus point win on home turf.

An improved workmanlike performance to score four tries and add only the second bonus point of the season so far.

Hinckley have yet to field a settled team this season which has, probably, had an effect on both results so far and the inconsistancy of performance.
Yet again changes through injury and unavailabilities mean’t Huw Marsden taking his place at No8. Liam Warren, Mark Deaville and a returning Ben Avent made up the bench.

Another bright autumnal day welcomed Dudley Kingswinford to Leicester Road and it was the visitors who had the best of the opening quarter. However, basic mistakes and final pass inaccuracy denied them the opening score - all sounds very familiar in a Hinckley context!
Dave Weston and Dylan Weddle made telling breaks out of defence, as the home side came more into the game, but their efforts ran out of steam through lack of close support.
Hinckley then did what they do best and kept the ball within the forwards to grind out territory and put the DK pack under severe pressure. This lead to a series of penalties, scrummages, a DK yellow card and a Hinckley penalty try as the referee lost patience with the ever retreating visiting pack. Mark Lord routinely converted from in front of the posts.
More good work followed with a forward surge down the blind side a link to Weston whose final pass was well timed to put Jordan Goddard in for Hinckley’s second try. Again converted by Lord. Confident and subtle handling by Dave Peck, Rich Harris and Lord kept the pressure on the visitors, while the introduction of Liam Warren and Ben Avent aided the cause.
However, Hinckley then went to sleep and some sloppy defending enabled DK to score an unconverted try virtually on the stroke of half time - score at the break being 14-5 in Hinckley’s favour.

The initial period of the second half was fairly even, however, a dropped pass in midfield enabled DK to score their second unconverted try to bring the score to 14-10 and a sense of unease within the Hinckley faithful. Lord failed with a subsequent penalty, but added one on the hour to move the score onto 17-10.
It was only in the last quarter after Mark Deaville’s introduction and Avent’s sterling work on the floor did Hinckley’s overall superiority come to the fore. Avent and Warren scored tries from forward surges, unfortunately, neither converted by Lord to conclude the scoring.
Final score 27-10 with a four try bonus point in the bag and an improvement in performance.
Still work to do in when to and when not to release the ball to the backs, how to draw a defender and time the pass (two clear scoring opportunities were squandered) and presentation of the ball when tackled. However, the lineout was better and so was the continuity. We saw more phases of play put together than in previous games especially in the mid part of the first half.

A trip to Sutton Coldfield next week.
