Match Report: Syston 20 v Hinckley 35 11th December 2016. By Andy Duggins

Hinckley U13s put in a great second half performance away from home to come back and beat a big Syston unit, demonstrating on a couple of occasions why they play rugby and not football....!

Hinckley kicked off but were caught napping, as Syston attacked from inside their own half, shipping the ball out wide to their dangerous full-back who rounded the Hinckley defence to score within the first two minutes of the game. An almost identical passage of play ensued from the re-start as the same player scored his second try and Hinckley found themselves 10-0 down after less than five minutes.

Hinckley eventually woke up and began to play some good rugby, maintaining possession of the ball and gaining territorial advantage. From a penalty on the Syston 22 metre line, Hutton broke free before off-loading to Piela who was tackled just short of the line, however Hutton showed great support play, collecting the loose ball to dive over for Hinckley’s first try.

Syston came back at Hinckley from the re-start but Hinckley’s defence held firm with crunching tackles from Buckler, Miller, Ellershaw and Wainde. Hinckley then counter-attacked following a turnover with strong runs from Elcoat, Salisbury and Ingrams pushing the visitors back into Syston’s half. As the ball went loose Hinckley kicked through, and the chasing Barnes dummied a fly-kick which caught everyone by surprise, including himself. Syston eventually gathered the ball and ran back at Hinckley from deep inside their own half showing good hands to score their third try and increase the lead to 15-5.

Hinckley attacked again from the re-start, and following another elusive run through the Syston defence, Salisbury was held up short of the line. Hinckley were awarded another penalty close to their opponents line from which Fray was tackled short, this time Buckler was on hand to collect the ball and dive over for Hinckley’s second try, reducing the deficit to 15-10.

As half time approached Syston enjoyed a good spell of territory and possession but Hinckley’s defence stood firm with notable tackles from Piela and Giles, eventually forcing the ball into touch to end the first half with Syston narrowly leading by 15-10.

Hinckley started the second half positively, attacking Syston with a run from Salisbury, who then sent a fly-kick sideways, again fooling both the opposition and himself. Syston cleared the ball and from Hinckley’s line-out the ball was passed superbly through the backs hands to Piela who showed strength and pace to score the equalising try in the corner.

Syston appeared to be tiring as Hinckley launched another attack from which Piela was tackled short, but the ball was retained and passed back out to Barnes who scored a well worked try to give Hinckley the lead for the first time in the game, the score now 15-20.

Hinckley’s pack now had the upper hand and won a scrum against the head deep inside the Syston half, allowing scrum-half Wainde to dart over for a try increasing the visitors lead to 15-25.
Syston attacked from the re-start, but excellent line speed from the Hinckley defence and solid tackles from Mensforth-Grove, Buckler and Bourne stopped them in their tracks forcing a scrum in Hinckleys favour, from which Wainde again spotted a gap to go over in the corner for Hinckleys sixth try taking the score to 15-30.

Syston were now on the ropes and Hinckley launched another attack from the re-start, this time the ball finding Barnes in space who kept the ball in hand and galloped into the corner to score his second and Hinckley’s seventh try, giving the visitors a now commanding 15-35 lead.
The home team seemed to regain some energy in the final few minutes of the game and from a scrum deep inside their own half the ball was fed to their full-back who again showed good pace to run in Syston’s fourth try reducing Hinckley’s lead to 20-35.
Syston pressured Hinckley again during the last phase of the game, using their big forwards to try and break the gain line, but brave tackles from Buckler and Miller kept them out and they were eventually bundled into touch to end a very entertaining game, final score Syston 20-35 Hinckley.
