Match Report: Hinckley 60 v Lutterworth 5 29th January 2017 by Andy Duggins

Hinckley Under 13s fielded a strong team for their first game of 2017, scoring 12 tries against local opponents Lutterworth.

Lutterworth kicked off, straight to full-back Moore, who launched Hinckley’s first attack, off-loading to Barnes who was tackled on the opponents’ 22 metre line. Hinckley retained the ball through some excellent rucking, from which the ball was passed out superbly through the backs hands to Al-Salloum on the right wing, who rounded his opposite number to score Hinckley’s opening try.

Hinckley attacked immediately from the re-start with strong runs from Burton and Goodwin, after the forwards had again demonstrated some excellent rucking. Following several phases, the ball eventually found Fountaine, making his debut on the left wing, who showed great pace to score Hinckley’s second try and increase the lead to 10-0.

Lutterworth made their first forray into Hinckley’s half following the re-start, but Hinckley were strong in defence and counter-attacked with surging runs from Drakeford, Miller, Smith and Underwood, and after some excellent mauling from Toon, the ball was passed cleanly through Hinckley’s backs’ hands to Al-Salloum who scored his second and Hinckley’s third try of the opening 10 minutes.
Once again Lutterworth came straight back at Hinckley whose defence held firm initially, but Lutterworth managed to feed the ball wide for the first time to score their only try of the game against the run of play.

Hinckley continued to show excellent ball retention from the re-start and, following several phases of play, Goodwin made a strong run before off-loading to Smith who scored his first try of the game, taking the score to Hinckley 20 Lutterworth 5.
Hinckley were now dominant in all areas of the game, Barnes gathering the ball from the re-start and passing to Fountaine who again showed his opposite number another clean pair of heels, scoring his second try from within his own half, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 25-5.

Hinckley turned over the ball shortly after the re-start, with strong runs from Duggins and Smith, who shipped the ball to Drakeford to score his first and Hinckley’s sixth try of the first half. Smith then scored a similar try after again combining with Duggins, Hutton and Drakeford, giving Hinckley a well-deserved 35-5 lead just before half-time.

Hinckley made a number of changes for the second half, including Salisbury, who collected the ball from the kick-off and ran deep into the opponents’ half. Hinckley retained the ball superbly after a series of rucks, before spinning the ball through the backs’ hands, finding full-back Moore in the line who went over in the corner, taking the score to Hinckley 40 - Lutterworth 5.

Hinckley, who had out-scrummaged their opponents all game, won another clean scrum and made good ground following a number of phases of excellent ball retention, Drakeford eventually breaking from a ruck to dart over for his second and Hinckley’s ninth try of the game.

A similar passage of play ensued following the re-start, this time the ball being passed out through the backs’ hands to find Fray who was tackled on the 5m line. Fortunately Drakeford was in support to collect the ball and dive over for his hat-trick and Hinckley’s half-century, the score now 50-5.

Hinckley did not show any mercy, and from the re-start launched another attack resulting in a penalty on their opponent’s 5m line. Underwood took the crash ball and stretched out one of his “go-go gadget” arms to score Hinckley’s eleventh try of the morning.

Lutterworth were now well and truly on the ropes. Hinckley won another clean scrum, from which the ball was fed quickly through the back’s hands with Wainde, Giles and Whittingham (L) all making good yards up to their opponents 22m line. Hinckley’s pack continued to display superb rucking and ball retention, before the ball was released to Hurley-Smith who was tackled and held up on the line. From the resulting 5m scrum, the back’s again showed slick hands finding Salisbury in space who scored Hinckley’s twelfth and final try in the corner.

Drakeford gathered the ball from the Lutterworth re-start and almost scored Hinckley’s thirteenth try with a darting break, but was tackled into touch in what was the last play of the game, final score Hinckley 60 – 5 Lutterworth.
This was an outstanding performance by Hinckley U13s after a long lay-off, displaying the benefits of all the hard work and effort that has been put into training by the whole squad. Well done all.
