Match Report: Hinckley 55 v 30 Old Laurentians 12th March 2017. by Andy Duggins

Despite Market Bosworth quite literally “crying off” earlier in the week, Old Laurentians from Rugby visited Leicester Road to take on almost the entire Hinckley Under 13s squad.
Hinckley kicked off, handing Old Laurentians possession initially, but from the first ruck of the game Burton stole the ball and passed to Goodwin who made a good break before off-loading to Drakeford who sprinted over the try-line for the first opening score of the game within 90 seconds.
Old Laurentians launched their first offensive following the re-start but a superb tackle and run by Moore put Hinckley back on the attack which ended when Piela was tackled just short of the line. Hinckley were dominant in the opening phase of the game and a high tackle on Fountaine resulted in a penalty to the home team from which Burton crashed over for Hinckley’s second try.
Hinckley were showing excellent hands and ball retention and following another move in the back line, Drakeford popped up for his second try and Hinckley’s third, giving the home team an early 15-0 lead.
Old Laurentians came back at Hinckley from the re-start but the defence was solid, with A. Whittingham putting in a notable tackle. Hinckley turned over the ball, and strong runs from Duggins, Burton and Barnes took the home team up to their opposition’s 22 metre line and, from a loose ball in the ruck, Burton picked up and charged over for his second try, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 20-0.
Hinckley came straight back at Old Laurentians after the re-start and, following a strong scrum, the ball was fed through the backs’ hands to Smith who went over for Hinckley’s fifth try of the half.
Old Laurentians tried to attack Hinckley again from the re-start but solid tackles from Hurley-Smith, Duggins, Moore and Underwood kept them out initially. The visitors continued to pressure Hinckley’s defence, however, and eventually got the ball out wide to score their opening try of the game, taking the score to 25-5.
Hinckley counter-attacked following the re-start after demonstrating great line speed in defence and, from a ruck five metres out, Hutton surged over the line for try number six for Hinckley.
In the final play of the first half, Hinckley won a clean scrum, passed the ball superbly through the backs’ hands to Piela, who rounded his opposite number to score an excellent try from just within his own half, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 35-5.
Hinckley made a number of substitutions for the second half, which Old Laurentians kicked off, and immediately went on the offensive, forcing a scrum within Hinckley’s half. The ball was passed to their pacey right winger who broke through Hinckley’s defence to score the opening try of the second half and reduce Hinckley’s lead to 35-10.
This seemed to lift Old Laurentians who attacked Hinckley again after the re-start, but they were kept out by great tackles from Fray, L. Whittingham and Barnes. Hinckley eventually cleared their lines and, after some great work in the ruck by Toon and Buckler, and runs from Al-Salloum, Mensforth-Grove and Salisbury, the home team found themselves deep in opposition territory.
Old Laurentians, however, won the resulting scrum and once again shipped the ball to their dangerous right winger who again pierced the Hinckley defence to score the visitors’ third try and take the score to 35-15.
Shortly after, in a similar passage of play, the same player found his way over Hinckley’s try line again, reducing the home team’s lead to 35-20.
Hinckley responded immediately from the re-start, Salisbury making a clean break before chipping over the opposition defence and re-gathering the ball, which was then passed superbly through the hands of Buckler, Barnes and Al-Salloum, who eventually offloaded to Fray to score in the corner to make it 40-20 to the home team.
Hinckley came back at Old Laurentians following the re-start, with a great catch and run by Giles who passed the ball to Buckler who also made good ground. Notable runs from L. Whittingham, Mensforth-Grove and Ingrams, took Hinckley into the oppostion’s 22 metre line. Old Laurentians counter-attacked but were stopped by a great tackle by Wainde and an interception and break by Fray.
Old Laurentians, however, stole the ball from the ruck on the halfway line and yet again got the ball to their danger man who scored in the corner, reducing Hinckley’s lead again to 40-25. Hinckley launched a promising attack from the re-start but a great run by Newitt was cut short by a high tackle.
Old Laurentians’ defence stood firm and, from a scrum on the halfway line, they ran in their sixth try of the game to take the score to a nervous 40-30.
Hinckley came back with a vengeance after making a number of substitutions for the final stage of the game and, following several excellent phases of posession, the ball was passed from Smith to Piela who superbly handed off his opposite number to score Hinckley’s ninth try and increase their lead to 45-30.
Old Laurentians attacked the home team from the re-start, but were stopped by a crunching tackle from Underwood. Hinckley’s defence was now holding firm, Salisbury stealing the ball from a maul and making good yards. Hutton picked up the loose ball from the resulting ruck but was held up on the opposition’s try line.
Old Laurentians took the 22 metre drop-out, the ball finding Fountaine in space on the left wing, who showed excellent pace to score Hinckley’s 10th try and further increase the lead to 50-30.
Hinckley took the ball from the re-start, Underwood deftly stealing the ball from a ruck and offloading to Drakeford, who went over for his hat trick and Hinckley’s 11th try of the game.
In the last play of the match, Old Laurentians launched their final attack, but a great steal and break from Buckler, and run from Drakeford, took Hinckley close to their opposition’s try line but they were held up short to end the game.
This was a great performance by the whole Hinckley squad, displaying some excellent running rugby and determined defence, especially when it looked like their opposition were coming back into the match, the final score Hinckley 55-30 Old Laurentians.
