Match Report: Hinckley 75 v 20 Syston 23rd April 2017. by Andy Duggins

Hinckley Under 13s bounced back from yesterday’s narrow defeat at Old Coventrians putting in a superb performance to run in 15 tries against a big Syston unit.
Hinckley kicked off and Syston attacked, using their big runners to try and break the gain line, but Fountaine put in a couple of solid early tackles to prevent them fromaining any momentum. Hinckley turned over the ball and runs from Burton and Moore took the home team to within 10 metres of Syston’s try line.
Syston regained possession but were soon turned over, and Hinckley attacked again, Ingrams and Guest making good yards before the ball found Fountaine out wide to score the opening try of the game.
Syston came straight back at Hinckley from the re-start but a promising break was curtailed by a superb cover tackle by full-back Moore. Hinckley attacked again, this time Burton and Menforth-Grove making good yards, with Moore in support to round the Syston defence and score Hinckley’s second try, increasing the lead to 10-0.
Hinckley then won a scrum against the head as the game re-commenced but Syston capitalised on a dropped pass to score their first try and reduce the deficit to 10-5.
The home team came back following the re-start, with Bourne stealing the ball from a ruck and off-loading to Guest who took Hinckley up the opposition’s five metre line. The ball was quickly re-cycled and a beautifully floated pass from A. Whittingham found Fountaine in space on the left wing to score his second try of the game and increase Hinckley’s lead to 15-5.
Syston went on the offensive as Hinckley re-started, with notable tackles from Guest and Hutton holding them back initially but, from a ruck five metres out, their scrum-half darted over for try number two, taking the score to 15-10.
The game was beginning to open up and Hinckley attacked from the kick-off with a strong run by Duggins to within 10 metres of the Syston line. Syston regained possession after being awarded a free-kick, again using their big runners, but tackles from Hurley-Smith and Burton prevented them from gaining any ground. Hinckley then turned over the ball with Burton, Bourne and Guest all making good yards up to the half-way line. Drakeford was then on hand to collect a loose ball and run in a superb solo try to increase Hinckley’s lead to 20-10.
Syston kicked to re-start but Hinckley launched another attack through Guest and Duggins, offloading deftly to Fountaine, who rounded his opposite number to score his hat trick and Hinckley’s fifth try.
Hinckley were now the dominant team and a dancing run from Hurley-Smith took them deep into their opposition’s half. Drakeford was in support but was bundled into touch just short of the try line. Hinckley won a solid scrum, the ball quickly shipped out by Newitt to find Fountaine out wide again to run in his fourth try of the game and increase Hinckley’s lead further to 30-10.
Syston were struggling to get out of their own half and further runs from Hurley-Smith and Fray took Hinckley back up to their opposition’s 22 metre line. Burton picked up and carried the ball to the try line but was held up just short. Syston tried to clear their lines but a great steal and break down the blind side by Hutton resulted in another try for the home team, taking the score to 35-10 and ending a very strong first half performance.
Hinckley brought on all their replacements for the second half, which Syston kicked off. Drakeford made an early steal in the ruck and offloaded to Salisbury who made a clean break down the right wing. Drakeford was in support to take the return pass to score his second and Hinckley’s eighth try, the score now 40-10.
Goodwin made a surging run from a scrum as the game re-commenced but he was taken into touch 10 metres short of the Syston line. Hinckley then won another scrum against the head, with Goodwin on hand again to pick up the loose ball and dive over for Hinckey’s ninth try of the game.
Hinckley kicked back to Syston at the re-start but a mistake by the visitors’ backs gave Hutton the opportunity to steal the ball and side-step his way through Syston’s flagging defence to score try number 10 for Hinckley, increasing their lead to 50-10.
Try number 11 followed soon after, Goodwin again making good ground before offloading to Salisbury five metres out, who scored to take the score to 55-10.
A gazelle-like run from Underwood from the re-start took Hinckley back up to Syston’s 22 metre line. Hinckley retained possession and further runs from Buckler and Fountaine, with Drakeford in support, resulted in try number 12 for the home team.
Syston re-started, kicking the ball straight into the hands of Hurley-Smith who made another darting run before passing to Drakeford who then offloaded to Fountaine to round his opposite number yet again and score his fifth try of the day, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 65-10.
Hinckley were displaying some superb running rugby and, following a great tackle and steal by Buckler, runs from Burton, Salisbury and Giles took the home team close again. A crunching tackle by Goodwin forced a scrum five metres from Syston’s try-line from which the ball was shipped by Wainde through the hands of Salisbury, Fray and Ellershaw, who found Al-Salloum in space to run in Hinckley’s 14th try in the corner. The score was now 70-10.
Syston showed good spirit and attacked Hinckley from the re-start, their dangerous full-back breaking through Hinckley’s defence to score their third try.
Hinckley came back from the kick-off with powerful runs from Miller, Fray and Goodwin, with Giles in support, who off-loaded to Buckler to sprint over for Hinckley’s 15th and final try of the game taking the score to 75-15.
Syston then scored a repeat try as the game re-commenced, their full-back again finding space to run in his second and Syston’s fourth score.
Hinckley launched their last attack of the match at the re-start, Wainde and Giles combining well with Burton in support who just put a foot in touch as he handed off a Syston tackle.
Syston made one last attempt for a consolation try from the resulting line-out, but tackles from Giles and Fray forced them into touch to end an excellent Hinckley team performance, the final score Hinckley 75-20 Syston
