Match Report Hinckley 60 v 25 Ashby 9th April 2017, by Andy Duggins

Hinckley Under 13s took a strong squad to their old nemesis Ashby on a very warm April morning.
Hinckley kicked off and Ashby launched their first attack but were stopped by good early tackles from Fountaine, Hurley-Smith and Salisbury.
The game was very evenly matched in the early stages but Hinckley started to show signs of getting the better of their opposition. Drakeford made a superb steal in the tackle and runs from Smith, Toon and Drakeford took Hinckley up to Ashby’s 22 metre line. Further funs from Goodwin and Buckler took Hinckley even closer, up to their opponents’ five metre line, but Ashby’s defence held firm. Hinckley were awarded a penalty from which runs by Underwood and Hurley-Smith got Hinckley to within inches of Ashby’s try line. The ball was quickly recycled and passed out wide to Al-Salloum to score Hinckley’s opening try of the game.
Ashby re-started, again kicking back to Hinckley, and runs from Salisbury and Fountaine took Hinckley deep into opposition territory. Al-Salloum made another break with support from Salisbury and Goodwin who was tackled just short of the try line.
Ashby cleared their lines from the resulting five metre scrum, only to find Fountaine out wide who showed his pace by rounding his opposite number to score Hinckley’s second try from the half-way line, increasing the visitors’ lead to 10-0.
This time Hinckley took the re-start, kicking long into Ashby’s half, the home team struggling to get out of their own 22 metre line due to Hinckley’s excellent line speed and solid defence. Hinckley eventually stole the ball and runs from Fountaine and Salisbury again took the visitors up to the five metre line where Drakeford was in support to go over in the corner for Hinckley’s third try.
Hinckley were now very much in the ascendency, Barnes taking the ball from Ashby’s re-start to gallop through from near his own 22 metre line to score a superb try and increase Hinckley’s lead to 20-0. Ashby attacked as the game re-commenced but could not break through Hinckley’s defensive line, Hurley-Smith making another notable tackle.
Hinckley stole the ball from an Ashby scrum and Barnes made good ground with a break up to the opposition’s 22 metre line. Ashby came away from a ruck with the ball but, following another superb turnover by the Hinckley forwards, Drakeford picked up the loose ball to power over with a couple of Ashby’s defenders hanging off him for his second try and Hinckley’s fifth.
Ashby tried to attack again as Hinckley re-started but were again stopped by a Hurley-Smith tackle, resulting in a turnover, from which Smith came away with the ball to sprint down the wing to score Hinckley’s sixth try and increase their lead to 30-0.
Ashby did not seem to have an answer to Hinckley’s early dominance, their next attack curtailed by a tackle from Smith and steal by Buckler. The opposition were persistent, however, and made their first forray into Hinckley’s 22 metre line from a free kick. The ball was passed out wide and Ashby found a gap in Hinckley’s defence to score their first try of the game.
Hinckley responded immediately from the re-start and, from a scrum on Ashby’s 22 metre line, the ball was fed to Fountaine who rounded his opposite number superbly to score Hinckley’s seventh try, extending their lead to 35-5.
Ashby launched their final attack of the first half and the ball was again passed out wide. Hinckley’s defence was broken for the second time from a free kick on their five metre line , enabling Ashby to score again to end a very entertaining first half, the score Hinckey 35-10 Ashby.
Hinckley made a number of substitutions for the second half, which they kicked off with the ball going straight to Ashby’s key player, Chester, who took advantage of a lapse in Hinckley’s defence to dance through and score Ashby’s third try reducing the deficit to 35-15.
Hinckley responded immediately, stealing the ball after the re-start, and counter-attacking through Piela who made good ground before being taken into touch. Ashby came straight back at Hinckley from deep within their own half but lost the ball following a solid tackle by A. Whittingham. The loose ball was picked up by Buckler who sprinted over for Hinckley’s eighth try, taking the score to 40-15.
Ashby kicked from the re-start but straight into the hands of A. Whittingham who made a strong break up to the opposition’s 10 metre line, with support from Drakeford, who was tackled just short of the try line. Ashby counter-attacked from their own 22 metre line, gaining good territory and forcing a scrum on Hinckley’s five metre line from which they intercepted a Hinckley pass to score their fourth try.
Hinckley bounced back, winning a scrum against the head, Drakeford making a darting run before offloading to Miller in support who powered over for Hinckley’s ninth try to increase their lead to 45-20.
Ashby counter-attacked again but lost the ball following a crunching tackle by Buckler, and a run from Duggins took Hinckley back into Ashby’s half. The game had now opened up with both teams displaying great counter-attacking rugby and good defence.
Hinckley turned over the ball to prevent another Ashby attack and, from a rolling maul five metres out, Goodwin peeled off to score try number 10 and take Hinckley to the 50 point mark.
Hinckley attacked again from the re-start with a run by Fray and several phases of ball retention along with further runs from L. Whittingham, Barnes, Burton, Hurley-Smith and A. Whittingham took them into Ashby’s half.
Fountaine collected a superb offload from Hurley-Smith and sprinted through Ashby’s desperate defence to score his hat trick and extend Hinckley’s lead to 55-20.
Hinckley’s 12th and final try came shortly after, when full-back Moore collected an Ashby kick and showed a great turn of speed to burst through their back line to score an excellent solo try.
Ashby did not give up and attacked Hinckley from the re-start, taking them up to Hinckley’s five metre line. But Hinckey turned over the ball at a ruck from which Duggins picked up to take Hinckley out of their 22 metre line.
Ashby then took advantage of a lapse in concentration by Hinckley, kicking through to force a five metre scrum from which their scrum half darted over to score their fifth try, the score now 60-25.
Ashby tried to break from within their own half following the re-start but an excellent double tackle by Buckler and Duggins and another by Wainde stopped them in their tracks, resulting in a Hinckley scrum. Ashby then created space behind Hinckley’s defence in the final passage of play but a superb try-saving tackle by Moore prevented another score.
Hinckley turned over the ball from the resulting ruck but knocked forward to end the game and an excellent team performance, beating their old enemies Ashby by 60-25.
