Match Report by Andy Duggins Syston 0 v 91 Hinckley 1st Oct 2017

Hinckley U14s hit the road again, this time making the relatively short journey to Syston RFC with a slightly reduced squad, five players being ruled out through injury. Syston unfortunately faired worse on the day with only 12 available players, therefore a number of “willing” Hinckley volunteers (A. and L. Whittingham and Burton) swapped their black and amber shirts for blue to even up the numbers, including a slightly over-dressed referee..!
Hinckley kicked off the first half, immediately forcing a turnover through a crunching Barnes tackle. Allen then made a clean break before off-loading to Moore in support, who found Fountaine on his right shoulder to take the pass and run in Hinckley’s first try of 15 within the opening two minutes. The conversion sailed wide but Hinckley had an early 5-0 lead.
Syston kicked back to Hinckley at the re-start, Allen taking the catch and showing superb footwork to dance his way through the defence to score Hinckley’s second try, which Drakeford converted to extend the visitor’s lead to 12-0.
This set the scene for the rest of the match, as from the re-start runs from Barnes, Toon, Hurley-Smith and Moore took Hinckley back up to the Syston 22m line before L. Whittingham put in an excellent tackle for the opposition. Syston tried to attack Hinckley with their first spell of possession, but were met by solid tackles from Hutton, Allen, Moore, Fountaine and Salisbury in midfield. Hinckley counter-attacked from a scrum on the halfway line with Allen, Drakeford and Buckler all making notable breaks. The ball was re-cycled and shipped out from Wainde to Moore, who had Drakeford in support to take the pass and score Hinckley’s third try. Another conversion went wide taking the score to 0-17.
Syston tried another offensive as the game re-commenced, but were soon turned over and Smith kicked forward into the opposition’s 22m. Hinckley maintained possession and Hurley-Smith took the ball up to the 5m line with a typically mazy run, before off-loading to Moore who stepped inside his opposite number for try number four under the posts which Drakeford converted to extend Hinckley’s lead to 24-0.
Hinckley soon stole the ball as the game re-started, following strong tackles from Underwood, Miller and Salisbury. Mensforth-Grove came away with the ball from a ruck and made excellent ground before finding Drakeford in support who darted in for his second and Hinckley’s fifth try of the day, further increasing the lead to 29-0 after missing the conversion.
Hinckley’s sixth try came shortly after, after runs from Smith and Salisbury set up Moore to round the opposition and run in his second try taking the score to 34-0 as the conversion went wide.
Syston eventually managed to get into Hinckley’s half from the re-start, getting the ball wide to their pacy winger, but he was smashed into touch from a flying Buckler tackle, which also took out Newitt Senior who was innocently watching from the sidelines!
In the final passage of play in the first half, Hinckley won a scrum against the head, number eight Barnes picking up the ball and making good ground, before finding Toon in support to power over for try number seven. Drakeford converted to give Hinckley a very one-sided 41-0 lead going into the break.
I’m not sure who was most relieved to hear the half-time whistle, the disheartened Syston players, the ref in his tight jeans, exhausted tee-boy Oakes or the match reporter who was suffering with writers cramp.
To try and make a game of it in the second half, Hinckley provided four new volunteers (Underwood, Fountaine, Salisbury and Smith) to make it 16 Syston players, but unfortunately this didn’t really help.
In a repeat of the first half , a dominant Hinckley went on the attack as the game re-started, Burton collecting the kick-off and making good yards before off-loading to Jacques, who burst through the Syston defence to score the opening try of the second half. Fourth choice kicker Miller was unlucky with the conversion but Hinckley had extended their lead to 46-0.
Hinckley came straight back at Syston as the game re-commenced, Burton and Toon putting in powerful runs up to the opposition’s 22m line. Syston managed to steal the ball but possession was short-lived as Wainde bundled his opposite number into touch. Hinckley superbly passed the ball out wide from the resulting line-out through the hands of Hurley-Smith, Allen, Jacques, A. Whittingham and eventually Moore who sprinted in for his hat-trick. Burton opted for the drop-kick conversion, much to the relief of Oakes, which sailed through the uprights taking the score to 53-0.
Hinckley were again dominant in the set-piece and, after the re-start, won a scrum against the head. Number eight Barnes dug the ball out and galloped through a dejected Syston defence to score another Hinckley try under the posts, which Burton converted, increasing the visitor’s lead to 60-0.
The game was getting a little repetitive, and the restless crowd cried for a streaker to liven things up, but Moore Senior was quickly asked to put his clothes back on and told it was only a joke!
Hinckley scored again as the game entered the final quarter, Hutton making an excellent steal at a ruck before passing to Drakeford in support. Smith made a superb tackle for the opposition, but Burton was on hand to take the off-load and trundle over for another try which was converted by fifth choice kicker Barnes, taking the score to 67-0.
Syston re-started, only to be on the receiving end of yet another try, this time Hutton combining with Jacques who crashed through for his second try of the game. Drakeford’s conversion went wide but Hinckley’s lead was now 72-0.
Hinckley were relentless and, after Syston kicked off again, Moore tried something different - a kick and chase in midfield - which pleased both the crowd and the match reporter. Syston cleared into touch but from the resulting line-out Jacques took a crash ball and smashed through for his second-half hat trick. The conversion was missed but the scoreline now read 77-0 to Hinckley and the rowdy away fans cheered for a century.
Hinckley won another scrum against the head in the final 10 minutes of play and, in a repeat of his earlier effort, Barnes gathered the ball from the base of the scrum and glided through from the halfway line to score his second try of the day. Burton converted to extend Hinckley’s lead to 84-0.
Hinckley re-started, kicking long to loan player Underwood, who made good ground before being stopped in his tracks by a crunching tackle from Jacques. Hinckley counter-attacked through Allen, who made another elusive run to score what was to be Hinckley’s final try of the game. Burton was successful with the conversion making the final score a tantalising 91-0.
Despite the depleted opposition, Hinckley U14s played some outstanding team rugby and took away a number of areas to work on in training, including conversions and fitness for the coaching staff..!
