Match Report by Andy Duggins: Hinckley 59 v 0 Worcester 15th Oct 2017

The last time Hinckley played this opposition the result didn’t exactly go their way, so when Worcester RFC were confirmed as a replacement fixture the Black and Ambers were looking forward to the opportunity to seek revenge, despite a slightly depleted squad due to injury and availability.

With a shrill blast from the referee’s brand new and very loud whistle, Worcester kicked off on Hinckley’s stadium pitch in front of a lively home crowd. The ball went straight to Jacques, who made an immediate impact taking Hinckley into their opposition’s 22 with a powerful run. Hinckley were clearly up for retribution, and further breaks from Giles and Underwood took them deeper into Worcester territory. Hinckley were awarded a penalty from which Drakeford made a darting break before popping to Burton who bulldozed over for the opening try of the game. Drakeford converted to give the home team an early 7-0 lead.

Hinckley came straight back at Worcester following the re-start, Miller catching the high ball and combining well with Wainde to make good ground. Worcester turned over the ball and launched their first counter-attack, but tackles from Drakeford and Moore in midfield kept them at bay. Hinckley stole the ball from a Worcester line-out, which Buckler got hold of, and like a gazelle in the Serengeti, burst through the Worcester defence from to score a superb try. Drakeford split the uprights again and Hinckley’s lead was extended to 14-0.

Hinckley’s third try came shortly afterwards in an almost identical passage of play, as Toon stole the ball from a line-out (after offering some words of encouragement to his opposite number!) and found Drakeford who darted over for his first and Hinckley’s third score. Another successful conversion by the try scorer took the tally to 21-0.

Worcester didn’t know what had hit them, and as they attacked again from the re-start, A Whittingham put in a solid tackle which lead to a Hinckley turnover. Jacques gathered the ball and off-loaded to Drakeford who ran in his second try, which he subsequently converted to increase the home team’s advantage to 28-0.

Worcester eventually found their way into Hinckley’s half as the game re-commenced, forcing a line-out on Hinckley's 5m line but they were turned over yet again, this time Mensforth-Grove making an excellent steal.

Worcester appeared to have found some energy and sustained an attacking period of play, although there were several interludes as the referee seemed to be practicing for a whistle-blowing competition! Hinckley’s defence remained solid, notable tackles from Fountaine, Buckler and Underwood keeping them at bay. Underwood and A Whittingham then made a thundering double challenge which floored their opposite number, luckily First-Aider D.Underwood showed great speed to sprint to the injured players attention....

As the game neared half-time Worcester enjoyed a brief spell of possession, but some outstanding work in the maul by Barnes and Miller resulted in a turnover, from which Barnes picked up the ball and took Hinckley back into the oppositions half. Worcester came back at Hinckley again, desperate to get a score on the electronic board before half time, but a crunching tackle from Buckler forced another turnover from which Barnes and Burton combined to make good ground. Smith was in support to take the pass out wide but he was bundled into touch inches short of the try-line.

In the last play of the half, Worcester launched a final attack, but were again met with solid tackles from Fountaine, Giles, A Whittingham and Smith as the half time whistle came.

Hinckley kicked off the second half and immediately went back on the offensive, Barnes picking up from a scrum and making a clean break before passing to Smith who rounded Worcester’s defensive line to touch down in the corner.
Drakeford converted brilliantly from the touchline and Hinckley had further extended their lead to 35-0.

Hinckley scored their sixth try following the re-start, Barnes making another break after winning a scrum against the head and passing to Drakeford in support who darted over for his hat-trick. The conversion narrowly missed taking the score to 40-0.

Hinckley brought on replacements Hurley-Smith, L Whittingham, Salisbury, McManus and Hutton to see the game off. Worcester re-started and kicked deep into Hinckley territory, only to find Jacques who set off from his own try-line and powered through almost the entire Worcester team to score a superb solo try under the posts. The conversion was missed but the scoreline had increased to 45-0.

Hinckley continued on the front foot as the game re-commenced, this time Salisbury making good ground up to the halfway line. Hinckley retained possession through a number of phases, Drakeford eventually taking a pass which set him up to splashdown for his fourth try of the day. Seventh choice kicker Mensforth-Grove toe-poked the conversion over the uprights and Hinckley surpassed the fifty point mark with a commanding 52-0 lead.

Worcester looked down and nearly out, and were soon to go further behind as Salisbury caught the ball from the re-start and made another darting break. Further runs and sublime handling from Buckler, Hurley-Smith and L Whittingham took the home side up to Worcesters 22m line. Jacques took the final pass and burst through the desolate Worcester defence to score his second try, which Toon successfully converted.

The referee and Worcester coaches decided this was enough punishment for one day, and with one last and very loud blow on his shiny new whistle called an end to the game some ten minutes early.
Hinckley Under 14s had put in another dominant performance and found sweet revenge for last year’s defeat with an emphatic win, final score Hinckley 59 - 0 Worcester. The squad can now enjoy a well-earned half-term rest before next weeks fixture at home to Kettering.
