Match Report by Andy Duggins: Hinckley 75 v 0 Market Harborough 5th November 2017

Guy Fawkes had nothing on this Hinckley Under 14s team as they fizzed into life after a three week spell without a match. Although Goodwin and Duggins had returned from injury after breaking opposing thumbs, Hinckley still had three players out with Al-Salloum (leg), Giles (shoulder) and Underwood (plums) all unavailable.

Fired up Hinckley kicked off on this cool bonfire morning, wearing their smart new away strip (or are they the new home shirts?), with a 16 year old female referee taking charge of her first game. Hinckley immediately went on the offensive, and from a line out on Harborough’s 22m line, runs from Allen, Jacques and Smith took Hinckley to within 5m of Harborough’s try line. Barnes was on hand to take the final offload and score Hinckley’s opening try in the corner. Drakeford was unlucky with the conversion but the home team had an early 5-0 lead.

Hinckley launched another attack shortly after the re-start, after a tackle from Hurley-Smith forced a turnover. The ball was fed to Jacques who exploded though Harborough’s defence to score Hinckley’s second try and extend their lead to 10-0 as the conversion sailed just wide.

Harborough had yet to set foot in Hinckley’s half, but a crackling Allen tackle resulted in another turnover and runs from Moore, Hutton, Toon, Goodwin and Fountaine took Hinckley deep into their opposition’s half. The ball was again superbly recycled and popped to Jacques at pace who burst through for his second and Hinckley’s third try of the opening quarter. Drakeford split the uprights to give Hinckley a commanding 17-0 lead.

Hinckley’s fourth try came immediately after the re-start, Jacques receiving the ball on his own 10m line and rocketed through the opposition to touch down for his hat trick. The conversion was missed but Hinckley’s lead was now 22-0, which was quickly extended to 29-0 as Allen collected the kick-off and sparkled past Harborough’s tiring defence to score an excellent solo try which Drakeford converted.

Harborough did eventually launch an attack as the game re-commenced, but it soon fizzled out after solid tackles by Moore and Buckler in midfield. Hinckley were awarded a penalty which Burton took on the crash, the ball was quickly re-cycled by Wainde to Allen, whose sublime switch pass put Jacques through for his fourth try and Hinckley’s sixth try of the half. Drakeford converted taking the score to 36-0.

Harborough re-started, Duggins gathering the kick-off which fell short of the 10m line. The referee played advantage and Hinckley retained possession, the ball finding Burton in the centre who galloped through to score try number seven for Hinckley. The conversion was missed as the half-time whistle blew, Hinckley with an imposing 41-0 lead.

Hinckley brought on all their replacements for the second half, and showed no let-up as breaks from Drakeford, A. Whittingham and Miller took them deep into Harborough’s half. The ball was recycled and taken on by L. Whittingham, McManus and Allen who burned down the wing into Harborough’s 22. Hinckley superbly retained possession, Barnes picking up from the ruck and popping to Burton who crashed over for his second score of the day. Drakeford converted, extending Hinckley’s lead to 48-0.

Hinckley passed the half-century mark shortly after the game re-commenced, when Drakeford took the ball following a line-out and whizzed down the left wing to splashdown for Hinckley’s ninth try, taking the score to 53-0.
Despite being offered the chance to end the game early, Harborough decided to play on, and came back at Hinckley as the game re-started. Hinckley soon turned over the ball though after some great work in the ruck by Buckler, the ball was passed out to Salisbury who flashed his way though Harborough’s flailing defence to score a superb individual try. The conversion fell short but Hinckley’s lead was now 58-0.

Hinckley were rampant, a kick and chase from Allen in midfield took them back into Harborough’s 22 and further breaks from McManus and Allen again got Hinckley to with 5m of the Harborough try-line. Hinckley won a scrum against the head after great work by the front row of Miller, Mensforth-Grove and Newitt, from which number 8 Barnes, picked up the ball and tried to crash over but was held up short.

Hinckley attacked again from the resulting 22 drop-out, Hutton, Fountaine, L. Whittingham and A. Whittingham combining well to gain good yards. Drakeford was on hand to gather the ball from a ruck and dive over for another Hinckley score. He (deliberately) missed the conversion to keep the game going and Hinckley’s lead was extended to 63-0.

In the last quarter Harborough made their first real foray into Hinckley’s half but it was short-lived, as Hinckley stole the ball at a line-out and counter-attacked through Fountaine and Drakeford. Hinckley retained possession and a sublime kick through by Allen was gathered by A. Whittingham who burst through like an out-of-control catherine wheel to score a brilliant well-worked try. Drakeford converted and Hinckley were now up to 70 points without reply.

Hinckley scored their next and final try shortly after the re-start, Fountaine making the initial break up to Harborough’s 22m line. Drakeford was in support to take the pass but was tackled 5m out. Hinckley recycled the ball from the ensuing ruck and Mensforth-Grove popped up with the ball to crash over. The conversion fell short and the final whistle sounded, Hinckley convincing winners by 75-0.

This was another outstanding performance by the whole squad, who continued to play disciplined rugby in spite of the opposition fizzling out as the game progressed. The young lady referee also ran the game very well.
The Hinckley Under 14s steamroller continues, bring on anyone else who dares to play them.....
