Match Report by Andy Duggins : Bugbrooke 5 v 82 Hinckley 14th January 2018

Hinckley U14s travelled to a relatively unknown Bugbrooke RFC in Northamptonshire for a re-arranged fixture.
Bugbrooke kicked off against a strong Hinckley squad who showed their intent with a very early try in the opening two minutes. Drakeford made a sublime steal before popping the ball to Jacques, who ran through the stunned Bugbrooke back line to score from just inside his own half. Drakeford converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.
Hinckley’s second try followed shortly after the game re-commenced, Jacques crashing through for another score after Drakeford and Allen had made initial breaks. The conversion split the uprights, extending Hinckley’s lead to 14-0.
Hinckley dominated the opening quarter and runs from Duggins, Burton and Toon took them deep into Bugbrooke territory. Bugbrooke launched their first offensive from a scrum on the halfway line but Hinckley showed their defence was as good as their attack, with strong tackles from Burton, Jacques, Hutton and Buckler. Hinckley turned over the ball on their own 22m line and excellent breaks from Golding, Buckler, Moore and Jacques took them back into the opposition’s 22.
Bugbrooke tried to clear their lines from a scrum but the kick found full-back Moore, who showed his juggling skills before making good yards with Allen in support, whose magnificent offload created space for Jacques and eventually Golding to break through and score Hinckley’s third try under the posts. Drakeford converted, taking the score to Hinckley 21-0 Bugbrooke.
A rather subdued looking Bugbrooke re-started, Hinckley attacking again through their forwards with strong runs from Underwood and Burton taking them up to the opposition’s 10m line. The ball was quickly re-cycled and passed neatly through the hands of Giles, Allen and Moore who glided in for his first try of the day and Hinckleys fourth. Drakeford made it four out of four with the conversion increasing Hinckley’s lead to 28-0.
Bugbrooke assumed a slightly different tactic following the re-start, kicking over the top into space behind Hinckley’s midfield. McManus was on hand to gather the loose ball and take the game back into Bugbrooke’s half with a strong run. Hinckley retained possession and the ball was fed out wide to Moore who rounded the flailing Bugbrooke defence to score his second and Hinckley’s fifth try of the first half. Drakeford’s conversion sailed over taking the scoreline to 35-0.
Hinckley’s sixth try came shortly after the game re-commenced, as Drakeford caught the kick-off on his own 10m line and darted through the Bugbrooke defence to score an excellent individual try, which he converted to extend the black and ambers’ lead to 42-0.
Hinckley were relentless and attacked again from the re-start as Newitt took the ball which was quickly re-cycled and taken forward by Burton and A. Whittingham. Hinckley retained possession through a number of phases before finally passing out wide to Fountaine on the left wing, who out-paced his opposite number to score another fantastic Hinckley try. Drakeford made it seven from seven with the conversion increasing Hinckley’s lead to a commanding 49-0.
Bugbrooke took advantage of a lapse in Hinckley’s discipline during the final minutes of the first half and a series of penalties took them into the visitor’s 22m line. Hinckley’s defence held firm initially with notable tackles from Burton, Hutton, Buckler, Toon, Miller, A. Whittingham, Barnes and Underwood, but a persistent Bugbrooke side eventually broke through to score their first and only try of the game just before half-time, the score now Bugbrooke 5 – 49 Hinckley.
Hinckley kicked off the second half to a Bugbrooke side who clearly had their tails up, launching a counter-attack from their own 22m line. Hinckley held them out through solid tackles from McManus and Underwood, Bugbrooke eventually resorting to a kick through which was gathered by L. Whittingham at full back whose break took Hinckley back into opposition territory.
Hinckley continued to apply pressure to a dogged Bugbrooke side and were awarded a scrum from which number 8 Barnes picked up the ball and broke down the blind side. Burton was in support to take the pass and bulldoze his way towards the Bugbrooke try-line before off-loading back to Barnes who powered over for Hinckley’s opening try of the second half. The conversion fell short but the visitor’s lead had increased to 54-5.
Bugbrooke launched another attack following the re-start but a crunching Underwood tackle led to a Hinckley turnover, the ball finding Smith who made a clean break taking the visitors back over the halfway line. Hinckley maintained possession and further runs from Burton, Goodwin and A. Whittingham took them into Bugbrooke’s 22. The ball was superbly re-cycled and shipped through the hands of Wainde, Giles, Smith and Fountaine, who coasted in for his second try. Drakeford converted, taking the score to 61-5.
Bugbrooke hadn’t given up, attacking from a penalty after the game re-commenced, but crunching tackles from Buckler and Duggins prevented any real threat. Hinckley turned over the ball and attacked from deep within their own half, initially through a break by L. Whittingham. Fountaine was in support to take the pass and put on the after-burners, scorching down the wing to score his hat-trick under the posts. Drakeford’s conversion extended Hinckley’s lead to 68-5.
Hinckley’s penultimate try came shortly after the re-start, Allen combining with Drakeford to take the game back into Bugbrooke’s 22. Jacques was in support to receive the final pass and burst through for his hat-trick, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 75-5 as Drakeford converted.
Hinckley continued to play disciplined rugby during the final stages of the match, launching another attack through a run by Jacques, who bounced off a couple of Bugbrooke defenders before being hauled down. Hinckley recycled the ball following some excellent rucking, and it was passed out to Smith in midfield who stormed through for Hinckley’s last try of the game.
Duggins scooped over the coversion to end another powerful and dominant performance by Hinckley U14s; the final score Bugbrooke 5-82 Hinckley.
