Match Report: Earlsdon 0 v 96 Hinckley 28th Jan 2018 by Andy Duggins
Hinckley U14s travelled to Earlsdon RFC for another re-scheduled fixture. Hinckley kicked off in their black and amber strip, against an unknown Earlsdon side, on a pleasantly mild January morning, and were soon on the score sheet. Strong tackles from Burton and Jacques resulted in a Hinckley turnover, from which the ball was passed neatly through the hands of Allen and Moore to Smith on the left wing, who rounded his opposite number and touched down in the corner. The conversion from wide was missed but the visitors had an early 5-0 lead.
Strong runs from Goodwin and Burton following the restart put Hinckley on the front foot again, Smith scoring his second try after sublime handling in Hinckley’s back line, extending their lead to 10-0 as another difficult conversion drifted wide. Breaks from Buckler, Golding and Allen created space for Drakeford who danced through the Earlsdon defence to score Hinckley’s third try shortly after the game re-commenced. The conversion was missed but the visitors’ lead was now 15-0.
The first half continued with Hinckley dominance and 6 more trys were scored by Smith (3), Drakeford , Jacques & Moore taking the half time core to 46-0.
Hinckley brought on a number of replacements for the second half which Earlsdon kicked off. The visitors showed no signs of mercy, as powerful runs from Underwood and Golding set up Barnes, who threw a ridiculous dummy and coasted in for the opening try of the half, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 51-0 as the conversion drifted wide.
Earlsdon insisted on continuing and went on the offensive, but crunching tackles from Moore, L. Whittingham and Buckler led to a Hinckley turnover. Superb handling from Wainde, A. Whittingham, Moore and Smith took the black and ambers deep into Earlsdon territory. The ball was recycled and popped to Burton who bulldozed his way through for another Hinckley try, taking the score to 56-0 as the drop-kicked conversion fell short.
A dominant Hinckley side continued to play excellent disciplined rugby, with strong runs from Duggins, Barnes and Underwood going forward and noteworthy tackles by Allen, Toon and A. Whittingham in defence. Hinckley’s next score followed a scrum which the Hinckley pack won brilliantly against the head, from which Wainde set up Allen, who carved his way through to score try number 11 for the visitors. Drakeford converted, taking the score to Earlsdon 0-63 Hinckley.
Hinckley continued to play champagne rugby as the game entered the final quarter and a second try from Allen, and two by Jacques, extended Hinckley’s lead to 82-0 after two more successful conversions by Drakeford.
Hinckley’s intensity in both attack and defence was relentless, like a tsunami crashing through the south-west of Coventry. Hinckley’s forwards forced a turnover on Earlsdon’s 22m line, from which the ball was passed to L. Whittingham on the right wing who blasted through for another Hinckley score. Drakeford’s magnificent conversion from out wide sailed between the uprights, taking the score to 89-0.
Hinckley’s final try was another fantastic team effort, the ball being retained through a number of phases by the pack before a typically bullocking run from A. Whittingham set up Hutton, whose exquisite show of the ball opened up the Earlsdon defence, allowing him to saunter under the posts. Newitt blasted over the conversion to end the game, final score Earlsdon 0-96 Hinckley.
This was another outstanding team performance by Hinckley U14s, who are playing some exceptional, disciplined rugby, and receiving nothing but praise and admiration from the opposition players, coaches and supporters!
