Match Report by Andy Duggins: 9th September 2018

A leaner, taller, brooding Hinckley U15s side took to the field following the summer heatwave for their inaugural match of the 2018-19 season, against an unknown Paviors team. It turned out to be a case of same score, different season, as this superbly drilled side took the visitors apart from the onset.

Hinckley’s opening score came within 30 seconds. The kick-off went loose from a Paviors knock-on and the ball was shipped out wide to Smith, who showed he hadn’t lost any of his pace over the break by out-stripping his opposite number to touch down in the corner for a 5-0 lead.

Try number two was just as quick after the re-start, strong runs from Underwood and Golding set up Allen who romped under the sticks to increase Hinckley’s lead to 12-0 after converting his own try.

Allen scored his second in almost identical fashion. Breaks by Duggins, Underwood and Moore took Hinckley deep into opposition territory before a sublime offload by Drakeford set Allen on his way for Hinckley’s third try. Another successful Allen conversion took the score to 19-0 after just five minutes.

Paviors were stunned, and soon on the back foot again as a blistering Jacques run and thundering kick from Allen took Hinckley deep into their 22. The first line-out followed, incorporating one of the law changes for this season, allowing players to be lifted. One of the training moves was called, the jumpers (with lifting handles strapped to their legs) shuffled position, before Barnes leapt like a salmon to take a superb catch. Wainde quickly shipped the ball out finding Burton who crashed through the midfield but was tackled five metres short, forcing the first scrum of the game.

Hinckley’s forwards packed down against some big Paviors units, winning the scrum brilliantly against the head, showing that size doesn’t (always) matter. Jacques crashed over from 10 metres out taking the score to Hinckley 26-0 Paviors as Allen’s conversion sailed over.

Hinckley were dominant in every facet of the game, Smith scoring his second try shortly after the re-start following another superb Hinckley scrum, increasing the lead to 31-0.
Paviors eventually made their first foray into Hinckley’s half as the match re-commenced, but it was short-lived as the black and ambers’ aggressive defence and excellent line speed forced a scrum. Runs by Wainde, Golding and Smith took Hinckley back into Paviors’ 22, before Drakeford picked up a loose ball and darted through for Hinckley’s sixth try of the morning which Allen converted to give Hinckley a 38-0 advantage.

Hinckley’s seventh and final try of the half came from another superbly worked line-out, this time Hutton taking the catch. Bullish breaks from Jacques and Drakeford took Hinckley up to the try line. Paviors managed to retain possession and counter-attacked, but firm tackles by Underwood, Toon, Goodwin and Duggins held them back, forcing a penalty five metres out. Hutton took the quick tap and popped the ball to Burton at pace who crashed over for his first score. Allen converted taking the half-time score to Hinckley 43-0 Paviors.

Hinckley brought on all their replacements for the second period, including Mensforth-Grove, making his long-awaited comeback following last season’s shoulder injury. Paviors kicked-off, finding Barnes who smashed back into the opposition defence. The ball was re-cycled and neatly passed through the hands of Drakeford, Allen, A. Whittingham and finally Jacques, who clattered through for Hinckley’s opening try of the second half. Allen’s conversion notched up the half century.

Jacques scored his hat-trick try shortly after the re-start, bulldozing over following a scrum on Paviors’ 22m line. Another excellent Allen conversion increased Hinckley’s lead to 57-0.

Despite the lack of resistance from the visitors’ defence, Hinckley continued to play some reasonably disciplined and fluent rugby. A jinking L. Whittingham run and sublime back-door offload to Drakeford took Hinckley back up to Paviors’ line. A solid scrum then set up Moore in midfield who ran a superb line to cruise under the sticks, taking the score to 62-0.

A spirited Paviors side counter-attacked as the game re-commenced, Hinckley’s defence holding firm through notable “well-timed” tackles by Barnes, Buckler and A. Whittingham. Paviors were awarded a penalty on Hinckley’s 22, opting to go for the kick to get at least three points on the scoreboard. Unfortunately this turned out to be a poor decision and, as the kick bounced back off the upright, Hinckley counter-attacked through breaks by Hutton, Buckler, Dewfield, L. Whittingham and finally Burton, to score a fantastic end to end try. Drakeford slotted the conversion, extending Hinckley’s lead to 69-0, much to the delight of Coach Goodfellow .

The 70 point barrier was broken shortly after the re-start, Barnes making good ground with the initial break before Moore sprinted through for his second and Hinckley’s 12th try. Moore converted his own try with a well-struck drop-kick, resulting in the first ambulance of the season as the ball sailed over the fence onto the head of an oblivious spectator on the adjacent pitch!

Hinckley had time for a final try in the last play of the shortened second half, Burton crashing over for his hat-trick following excellent breaks by Drakeford and A. Whittingham. The referee decided Paviors had received enough punishment for the morning, blowing his whistle to end the game, final score Hinckley 81-0 Paviors.
This was an exemplary performance by the whole squad and an encouraging start to the new season, building on the success of last year with some superb running rugby, solid defence and fantastic fitness levels (as well as possibly a little lingering fury). Well done all. Good to be back!
