Match Report by Bee & Andy Duggins: 16th Sept 2018

Hinckley U15s continued their excellent early season form, scoring half a century against a dogged Newbold team, despite the game being curtailed 15 minutes short due to an opposition player injury.

Newbold kicked off and Hinckley immediately went on the offensive, Drakeford with a strong run into Newbold’s half, but the home side’s early defence was solid. Newbold counter-attacked, testing Hinckley’s defence, which proved equally firm with notable tackles from Moore, A. Whittingham and Jacques.

Hinckley turned over the ball and passed out wide to Smith in space but unfortunately he was snipered on the opposition’s 22m line. Hinckley maintained their attack with powerful runs by Barnes and Golding but Newbold remained defiant. The ball was quickly recycled and, after some exquisite handling in the back line, Jacques eventually broke through to score Hinckley’s first try in the corner. Allen converted superbly from the touchline to give the black and ambers a deserved 7-0 lead.

Newbold re-started and were soon on the back foot again as runs from Moore and Toon took Hinckley into opposition territory. Hinckley were awarded a penalty for a high tackle, from which Allen sent a booming kick into the river Avon, accurately indicated by linesman Moore frantically waving his bright new flag like a high school cheerleader.

The Hinckley forwards set up a driving maul from the resulting line-out and came close to scoring try number two but the ball was knocked forward. Hinckley won the scrum against the head, number eight Barnes picking up and driving through but he was held up on the line. Hinckley were inches short, as the ball bobbed about like a hot potato, but they still couldn’t break through Newbold’s staunch defence.

Hinckley were camped in Newbold’s 22 and attacked again, the ball swiftly passed through the hands of Wainde to Allen who took the game up to the opposition’s 10m line. Hinckley maintained possession, forwards Duggins and Underwood making further ground with strong runs. The ball was eventually shipped out wide to Golding who majestically stepped inside his opposite number to score under the posts. Allen split the uprights, sending another ball into the Avon and prompting a little more sneaky flag twirling, increasing Hinckley’s lead to 14-0.

Hinckley’s third try came immediately after the re-start, Newbold foolishly kicking straight to Jacques who put on the after-burners and blasted through the flailing defence for a fantastic solo try. The conversion was a “given” as Newbold were down to their last ball, taking the score to Newbold 0 – 21 Hinckley.

Newbold were suddenly fired up and attacked Hinckley from the re-start, but thumping tackles by Toon, Goodwin and Hutton forced a knock-on just short of Hinckley’s try-line. Hinckley cleared with another thunderous Allen kick up to the halfway line much to the delight of flourescent flag waving cheerleader Moore. Newbold tried to pass the ball out from the line-out but a sublime interception by Drakeford resulted in Hinckley’s fourth try as he galloped over the try-line. Another “gimee” conversion increased the visitors’ lead to 28-0.

Hinckley were now dominant and launched another attack as the game re-commenced, with breaks by Underwood, Moore and Jacques, who nearly put Smith through five metres out but the final pass went astray. Hinckley’s pack won another scrum against the head, following which Barnes and Underwood went close with surging runs, but Newbold held out once again. The ball was re-cycled and passed swiftly out to A. Whittingham to score a superb try on the left wing. Allen struck another fantastic conversion with one of the wet balls retrieved from the river, extending Hinckley’s lead to 35-0.

Hinckley’s sixth and final try of the first half followed shortly after the re-start. Newbold were turned over in their own 22 after a long kick downfield from Allen and chase by Smith. Hutton and Jacques took the ball forward, with Underwood popping up on the left wing to breeze over the line. The referee blew for half-time, Hinckley with a commanding 40-0 lead.

Hinckley made a number of changes for the second half and scored within two minutes of the kick-off, runs by Fountaine and Underwood taking the black and ambers into Newbold’s 22 before Moore danced his way over the line in the corner, the score now 45-0.

Newbold hadn’t given up and came back at Hinckley as the game re-commenced, but they were turned over and Hinckley launched a counter-attack with some excellent running rugby - Jacques, Drakeford, Moore and Underwood all making good yards. Newbold tried to clear from a five metre scrum but the kick found full-back Golding who caught the ball brilliantly and took the game back into Newbold’s 22. Moore was in support to take the pass before off-loading to Allen who powered through for another try, taking Hinckley up to the half-century without reply.

Newbold were determined for a consolation score, and enjoyed their longest period of possession of the match after the re-start. Hinckley’s defence initially held firm, Jacques putting in a typically crunching tackle, but Newbold persisted and were rewarded with a try in the corner.
Unfortunately one of Newbold’s players was injured during the passage of play and the referee decided to end the game with at least 15 minutes remaining, final score Newbold 5 - 50 Hinckley.
This was another dazzling performance by the U15s, with some wonderful running rugby. The opposition was slightly stiffer this game and served to highlight some areas where the squad can improve even more going forward. Cheerleader Moore’s routines will also, hopefully, improve.
