Sunday 22 January saw a return to the pitch following last weeks cancelled fixture due to a frozen pitch. The boys had everything to play for – defending their undefeated home run, and completing their second win of the season over Market Harborough.

Match 1 – Hinckley Lions 15 – 5 Market Harborough

The first match started with opportunities arising at both ends early in the game. Both teams put in some excellent tackling however, and it was apparent that this was going to be a close game. Hinckley’s determination shone through however and gave Smith the opportunity to score his first of two tries, in trademark style, taking possession around the halfway line and powering through the opposition to score.

Market Harborough weren’t going to give Hinckley an easy game however, and were soon on the score sheet themselves following a pacey weaving run through the Hinckley defensive line. Hubbard sealed the win for Hinckley however with his first of the day following some great passing and strong support play.

Match 2 – Hinckley Tigers 10 – 5 Market Harborough

The match taking place on the opposite pitch was equally as close and hard-fought. In this game there was a real air of confidence amongst the Hinckley players as time after time they prevented Harborough from breaking away to score. The same confidence allowed them to take full advantage of possession and it wasn’t long before Grewcock had scored the first try following a great pass from Towers.

Market Harborough eventually equalised, but Hinckley soon took back the advantage with a great try from Towers who shrugged off 2 of Harborough’s tacklers before cutting inside, wrong-footing the defence and scoring his first try of the day. Harborough almost equalised in the dying second of the game but for Burton’s fantastic tackle one yard from the try line causing the ball to spill into touch. Hinckley cleared their lines from the lineout and the win was theirs.

Match 3 – Hinckley Tigers 15 – 15 Market Harborough

It was time to switch the teams around, and the Tigers face a Harborough team that didn’t fancy losing twice. As a result the game was very tight. Both teams played exceptionally, with one or two strong individual performances for Harborough, while Hinckley opted for the strong team effort with plenty of passing, strong tackling and ultimately, 3 tries from 3 different players – Burton, Towers and Lockett.

Match 4 – Hinckley Lions 20 – 10 Market Harborough

The final game kicked off with all Hinckley players determined to protect their home record. Market Harborough took the first points however with a quick try from the whistle. Hubbard soon made amends for Hinckley however with a stunning try following a pass from Catt. Sprinting to the left corner, he realised he was getting dangerously close to touch with the Harborough defence closing in. With a neat little duck inside, he threw Harborough off their chase and weaved through 2 more players to score and draw the match level.

Smith put Hinckley in the lead in the second half with a three quarter length run, powering through the attempted Harborough tackles to score. Harborough added their second, but Hinckley made sure oif the win with 2 more tries – Halka getting his name on the sheet with a strong run through the Harborough defence to get his first try.
