Any fixture versus Lutterworth is going to be tough…today was no exception…
The first match saw Hinckley defending well, but Lutterworth showing simply superb offloading of the ball. First half brought one try from Marsden to four from Lutterworth. The second half ran better for Hinckley with more reward for our efforts. Middleton, Marston and Bennett scored to make the final score 4-8 to Lutterworth. Exuberant tagging from Bennett was notable.
Second match versus Lutterworth saw a rock solid Hinckley close the door defensively. Simmons and Moore taking 17 tags between them, led to a half time score of 4-0 to Hinckley. Curless, Doyle and Fisher (hat-trick) scored freely in the second half. Lutterworth could only reply with two consolation tries, leaving a final score of 9-2 to Hinckley.
Third match versus Broad Street was more straight forwards for squad one. Dunne, Bennett and Middleton put four tries on the score board to Broad Street’s one. Free tagging from Stockton, Bennett, Kime, Stokes and Hicks saw Broad Street going backwards on more than one occasion. The second half if anything saw a tightening of Hinckley’s defence, with a further five tries to Broad Streets one, courtesy of Middleton, Stockton, Bennett and Causon. Hicks, Causon, Middleton, Bennett, Stockton and Dunne all ripping tags. Dunne and Middleton both made commendable runs from deep in their own half to score tries. 9-2 to Hinckley.
Fourth match versus Broad Street for squad two was also an open and shut case. First half score was 4-0 courtesy of Simmons (hat-trick) and Moore. Tagging merits go to Cooper for seven tags in the half. Second half ran similarly smoothly with Dunne and Doyle both running in long-distance solo tries. Doyle also added nearly half the tagging on his own in this half. Final score 8-1 to Hinckley.
Fifth match for squad two, versus Lutterworth. Doyle, Special K, Simmons made a quick start on the Lutterworth defence, scoring four tries to their two in reply. Tagging was slow in this match as the rugby seemed very much more end to end as Lutterworth appeared to tire somewhat. The second half saw Simmons, Fisher, Moore and Gamble cruise away from Lutterworth, making the final score 10-5.
Sixth match for squad one again versus Lutterworth. Again Lutterworth fielded a strong squad, and again they proved tricky. Causon and Dunne kept us in contention in the first half scoring a try each to Lutterworth's four. All six players on the pitch took multiple tags. Hinckley came out in the second half, determined to catch up. Simmons, Dunne, Middleton and Stockton all did their best to change the final result, capitalising on two turnover balls leading quickly to tries. Hicks and Causon again taking a heavy toll in tags limited Lutterworth to a draw on the call of “final play”. Lutterworth had the ball. Despite furious efforts and several tags taken in the play, Lutterworth squeezed through to snatch a win with the final touch of the ball, 8-7.
