U8’s match report – Melbourne 06/10/2013
10am, Melbourne’s ground. “We’ve got until 11am before the first team need the pitches to play”. We had to squeeze in 3 matches quickly and rotate the squads so everyone got game time.
On with the first match, Simmons wasted no time in scoring a hat-trick of tries, added to by Causon and Fisher. Precise tagging from Dunne and Abrahamson won two turnover balls to make the half time score 1-5 to Hinckley. The second half was a more even affair as Melbourne matched Hinckley try for try. Further tries for Causon, Gamble and Abrahamson sealed the 8-4 score line with more tags from Dunne and Bennett. Biggs made her debut.
Second match saw Melbourne running more freely, with the running being end to end. Doyle and Stokes made the most of tagging, whilst Kime and Middleton added to the half time score of 5-3 to Melbourne. Moore, Middleton and Farrell added tries in the second half with more tags from Doyle and Stokes, but Melbourne had the better half, ending 9-6 to the home side.
The final match was a 5 minute rotation for all the players until our time was up. The pace was fast and few tags were taken. Halka deserves a mention for excellent support passing. Tries from Dunne, Moore and Simmons put the final score at 3-3.
A fitting, evenly balanced match that stretched all the players, albeit for a quick mornings play.
