Back in business again.

We half expected today’s fixtures to be cancelled due to the wet pitches, but the last 48hrs saw a rapid improvement in conditions, so Syston turned up and the games were on. Happy New Year! A squad of 21 players turned out today, so many thanks to all the parents.

Squad one played as Doyle, Gamble, Moore, Stockton, Hicks, Middleton and Halka.

Match 1 saw Hinckley lead the first half with tries from Gamble, Doyle and Stockton, for one in reply for Syston. Hicks started the New Year the way he finished 2013 as he took seven tags this half, ably supported by Moore and Doyle. Second half Gamble and Doyle’s two tries were met with two more from Syston, leaving the final score line 5-3 to Hinckley. Every player on the pitch took at least one tag. Job done.

Match 2 and squad one met a stronger Syston squad. Despite that, Syston could not score a try in the first half to get back at the three scored by Doyle (2) and Stockton. Syston came out fighting in the second half to try to get back in the game, scoring two tries. Hinckley managed a further try from Halka, with tagging support notably from Doyle and Middleton. Shift over; the score line was 4-2 to Hinckley.

Match 3 and the nightshift started for Syston. Hinckley put in overtime thumping in tries from Gamble, Moore, Stockton, Hicks and Middleton. Syston tried to keep pace with three of their own, but Doyle (9), Halka (5), Stockton (2) and Moore (1) denied them any further scores for the half. Second half and Syston were again outgunned. Doyle, Moore and Hicks boxed up the win, with only one try from Syston in this half. Tagging again was at a staggering rate, with Doyle (7), Moore (3), Stockton (1), Hicks (9) and Halka (3).

Squad two comprised Stokes, Farrell, Biggs, Bennett, Deacon, Pickard and Fisher.

Match 1, Syston plugged away at Hinckley’s defence. Biggs, Bennett, Deacon, Pickard and Fisher took the few tags on offer in the first half, and Fisher added a try to keep us close to their score line. Second half and Syston ran in more tries. Bennett and Fisher again obliged for Hinckley, finishing a 6-3 score line to Systons favour. More tags seen from Stokes, Farrell, Biggs, Bennett, Deacon and Fisher. OK, not the result, but definitely showing promise.

Match 2, Fisher took the battle to Syston touching down two tries. Bennett, Biggs and Fisher made the most of the tagging duties. First half score line was 3-2 to Syston. Syston stepped up a gear in the second half, pulling ahead by a clear 4 tries. Stokes, Farrell, Biggs and Fisher kept tagging away for Hinckley. Final score line 3-7 to Syston.

Match 3, squad two wanted to come away from today with something – and they got it. Daylight opened up in the score line in the first half, with Stokes (1) and Fisher (2) scoring tries. Fisher, Bennett, Biggs, Farrell and Stokes tagged to go ahead 3-2 at half time. Syston came out in fifth gear in the second half. Fisher added a further two tries for Hinckley and put in a demon tagging effort. Syston slipped through the try line three times, but could only snatch a draw.

Squad three employed Causon, Simmons, Marston, Curless, Dunne, Cooper and Palmer.

Match 1, a very business-like start to the game resulted in a 2-1 score line from Hinckley at half time. Tries from Simmons and Curless were helped by tags also from Simmons and Cooper. Runs out in to touch by both sides meant the game kept changing possession before tries were scored. Second half and the Hinckley tag machine swung in to action. Causon, Palmer, Simmons, Curless, Dunne and Cooper all took multiple tags to close out any Syston attack. Add to that, quality support play and some deft off-loading and Hinckley pushed over three more tries to finish with a 5-2 score line.

Match 2, Syston delivered a strong squad. Hinckley scored first, settling nerves, but Syston did not lie down, scoring the next two. Causon (1), Simmons (2) and Dunne (1) ensured the try count stayed ahead of Syston’s. Simmons, Curless and Palmer deserve note for their frantic tagging rates. Second half and Systons strong squad made changes and came out playing for a win. Causon and Curless added to the score line, but the game was won by the tagging of Causon, Marston, Dunne, Cooper and Palmer, keeping Syston off the try line enough to return a final score line of 6-5 to Hinckley.

Match 3 and with cold hands, both sides lined up for a finale. Causon (1) Simmons (1) and Curless (2) made swift work of opening the bank balance for two in reply from Syston. Curless, Causon Cooper and Palmer made a solid defence, with Curless taking three tags in one series of play. 4-2 score line at half time. A long second half began with a couple of injury changes as play became more physical, but Hinckley responded to the pressure positively. One try escaped Hinckley’s prison like defence, but we scored three more in reply to leave a 7-3 score line. Tagging results were Causon (8), Simmons (4), Curless (5), Dunne (2), Cooper (1), Palmer (2). Hinckley satisfyingly used the quick offload passes to deny Syston tags and their own tagging resulted in a 7 tag turnover. Job done!
